SUMMARY:LCA methodology – Comparing Apples to Apples: Similarities and Differences in LCA methodology
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Dr. Matthias Stratmann\, Ferdinand Kähler (nova-Institute) \nComparing apples to apples from a sustainability point of view is not so easy – Just as little as an effective implementation of the topic of sustainability assessment into business processes.\nTwo great topics for a “nova session” with sustainability experts from the nova-Institute supported by an external speaker from AllocNow. \nInformation on environmental impacts of products become more and more important. Sustainability is a megatrend\, customers ask about Carbon Footprints and specific claims must be substantiated. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the most recognized methodology to assess potential environmental impacts of products. However\, the flexibility of LCA methodology and the fact that different standards exist make it very difficult to compare products on the basis of different studies. That is why the European Commission has\, for example\, initiated the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF)\, aiming to establish harmonised rules. \nMultiple frameworks and guidelines for conducting Life Cycle Assessments have been published over the years which are all applied in industry and academia. The objective of this session is to evaluate the frameworks and guidelines for the methodological choices which impact LCAs for products. The session will focus on where methodological choices of guidelines are similar to each other\, where they are different and the implication of the methodological choices for the results of the LCA. \nA second emphasis will be placed on the integration of Life Cycle Assessments into business processes. LCA does not happen in companies in isolation. We live in times of digitalisation and Industry 4.0 where companies are supported by powerful ERP systems. We will show you the differences and similarities of the various requirements and challenges when it comes to LCA and digitalisation. The company AllocNow GmbH will present an example of how the integration of corporate data and sustainability assessments can look like. \n  \nFurther information. \n  \nTopics\n\nSustainability Assessment and LCA\nVariety of standards for Life Cycle Assessment\nMethodological consistency and differences\nIntegration and automation of LCA in business processes\n\nJoin us and learn more on how to conduct LCAs and how to integrate them into your business processes. The session addresses LCA users or other staff that is working on sustainability topics and can bring already some experiences with LCA application. \n  \nProgram\n25 October 2023\, 10:00 – 16:00 h (CET: Central European Time)\, on-site \nHosts: Dr. Matthias Stratmann\, Ferdinand Kähler (nova-Institute) \n\n\n\n10:00\nIntroduction and Welcome – Tour de Table\n\n\n10:30\nRelevant norms and standards for LCA\nDifferent use cases and applications of LCA\n\n\n11:00\nMethodological Aspects Part 1 \n\nSystem boundaries – Cut off und Materiality\, temporal Scope\nFunctional Unit\nElectricity\nCarbon Offsets\nLand use and Land Use Change\n\n\n\n\n12:30\nLunch\n\n\n13:15\nMethodological Aspects Part 2 \n\nBiogenic Carbon and temporary storage\nEoL Allocation (in advanced recycling)\nMass Balance and free attribution\nVerification and reporting\n\n\n\n\n14:45\nCoffee Break\n\n\n15:00\nLCA in Industry – digitalization and automation\n\n\n15:10\nCase Study: AllocNow GmbH – Automated LCA and Sustainability Platform\n\n\n15:30\nFinal Discussion\n\n\n16:00\nEnd of Session\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Food and Feed Crops for Bio-based Materials – Facts\, Myths\, Policy and Practical Examples
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Michael Carus and Lara Dammer (nova-Institute) \nThere is a widely held view that the use of food and feed crops for anything other than food and feed uses – namely\, for bio-based chemicals and materials – is detrimental to food security. We are ready to challenge this perception and want to encourage differentiated discussions and evidence-based opinion making. \nIn this half-day webinar\, nova-Institute will present findings from latest research indicating that the impacts of using food and feed crops are much more complex than usually assumed and can even be positive\, with regards to climate\, land productivity\, environment\, farmers’ income\, market stability\, feed security and food security. Experts will also highlight the recent political framework for using biomass for biofuels and bio-based chemicals and materials. Three companies will showcase their ways of using sustainably sourced primary biomass. \n  \nTopics \n\nWhy bio-based materials have an important role to play for mitigating climate change\nGlobal biomass availability\nOverall environmental impacts and sustainability assessments\nEconomic effects\nProtein supply and emergency reserves\nPolitical framework\nPractical examples of companies utilising sustainably sourced primary biomass\n\nDo not miss this opportunity to engage directly with experts from the industry\, academia and policy.
