SUMMARY:Food and Feed Crops for Bio-based Materials – Facts\, Myths\, Policy and Practical Examples
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Michael Carus and Lara Dammer (nova-Institute) \nThere is a widely held view that the use of food and feed crops for anything other than food and feed uses – namely\, for bio-based chemicals and materials – is detrimental to food security. We are ready to challenge this perception and want to encourage differentiated discussions and evidence-based opinion making. \nIn this half-day webinar\, nova-Institute will present findings from latest research indicating that the impacts of using food and feed crops are much more complex than usually assumed and can even be positive\, with regards to climate\, land productivity\, environment\, farmers’ income\, market stability\, feed security and food security. Experts will also highlight the recent political framework for using biomass for biofuels and bio-based chemicals and materials. Three companies will showcase their ways of using sustainably sourced primary biomass. \n  \nTopics \n\nWhy bio-based materials have an important role to play for mitigating climate change\nGlobal biomass availability\nOverall environmental impacts and sustainability assessments\nEconomic effects\nProtein supply and emergency reserves\nPolitical framework\nPractical examples of companies utilising sustainably sourced primary biomass\n\nDo not miss this opportunity to engage directly with experts from the industry\, academia and policy. Join us for an informative and engaging nova Session on “Food and Feed Crops for Bio-based Materials – Facts\, Myths\, Policy and Practical Examples”. \n  \nProgram \n(CET: Central European Time)\n \n\n\n\n13:00-13:15\nWelcome and introduction Michael Carus\n\n\n13:15-14:15\nThe Use of Food and Feed Crops for Bio-based Materials and the Related Effects on Food Security – new insights from recent research (Michael Carus\, Lara Dammer)\n\n\n14:15-14:50\nStatus quo of policy on biomass uses and sustainability requirements – Policy framework on bio-based plastics and biodegradable and compostable plastics\, EU Taxonomy\, RED III\, ReFuel EU Aviation\, Fuel EU Maritime (Lara Dammer)\n\n\n14:50-15:00\nCoffee break\n\n\n15:00-16:00\nPractical examples of sustainable bio-based materials from primary biomass Martin Clemesha\, Braskem | Patrick Waes\, CovationBio | Marilia Foukaraki\, Cosun Beet Company\n\n\n16:00-16:30\nDiscussion\, outlook and wrap-up\n\n\n\n
